Tutorial : Tubular Netting Stitch with Crystals

Someone asked for a pattern for the straps used in Thailand royal funeral for King Bhumibol Adulyadej, they made from crystals and beetle wings as a tassel.

ในส่วนของสายรัด น่าจะร้อยด้วยวิธี Tubular Netting ตามวิธีคร่าว ๆ ด้านล่างนี้

I believe the strap used tubular netting stitch, here the short tutorial.

อุปกรณ์ / Materials

- คริสตัลสวารอฟสกี้ ทรงเหลี่ยมแหลม 5328/5301 ขนาด 4 มิล, ส่วนสีไม่แน่ใจ สวามีสีเขียวสีชมพูหลายเชดมาก ต้องเห็นของจริงถึงจะเดาได้ แต่ในตัวอย่างนี้ จะใช้สี Fern Green, Fuchsia และ White Opal

- Swarovski crystal bicone 5328/5301 4mm, I can't really tell from the photo. Swarovski got many shades of green and pink. I must see the real piece which I don't think it's possible now. In my example, I used what I had right now, Fern Green, Fuchsia and White Opal

- ลูกปัดญี่ปุ่นมิยูกิ ขนาด 15/0 #3 สีทอง ถ้าตามภาพ น่าจะใช้ขนาด 15 มากกว่าขนาดมาตรฐานคือ 11 เคยลองร้อยด้วยขนาด 11 แล้ว มันดูใหญ่กว่าภาพมาก

- Miyuki seed beads 15/0 #3 Silverlined Gold, I believe it used 15/0 here. I tried with 11/0 but it looked too big.  

- เข็มร้อยลูกปัด ขนาด 11 หรือเล็กกว่านั้น เนื่องจากการใช้ลูกปัดขนาดเล็กมาก ๆ ต้องใช้เข็มที่เล็กมากไปด้วย ไม่งั้นร้อยไม่ได้ค่ะ

- Beading needle #11 or smaller needle. Because you will work with 15/0, you need small needle to pass through these beads.

- ด้าย/ไหม Nymo B หรือ D, หรือ Fireline ขนาด 4lb/Size B แนะนำ Nymo B ถ้าหาซื้อได้ แต่ถ้าไม่มี Nymo D ก็ใช้ได้ ตามตัวอย่างใช้ Nymo D แต่จะมีบางจุดที่ร้อยยากถึงขนาดต้องใช้คีบช่วยดึงเข็ม 

- Nymo B or D, or Fireline 4lb/Size B or your favorite thread. Depend on what you have and can buy. I live where I can't find everything I need locally. In my example, I used Nymo D and I had problem in some spots where I connected with the new thread. So I recommend Nymo B which is smaller or Fireline small thread if you have it.

วิธีทำ / Instruction

1.

ตัดด้ายพอประมาณ (ประมาณสองแขน) ร้อยลูกปัด 15/0 สลับด้วยคริสตัล ทำแบบนี้แปดครั้ง รวมทั้งหมด 16 เม็ดตามภาพ แล้วก็ร้อยผ่านลูกปัด 15/0 เม็ดแรก (ลูกศรแดง) ทิ้งหางด้าย 3-4 นิ้ว ร้อยผ่านทุกเม็ดอีกหนึ่งครั้ง และผูกปมกับหางด้าย จากนั้นก็ร้อยผ่านลูกปัด 15/0 เม็ดแรก (ลูกศรแดง)

Cut the comfortable length of thread (I always used two arms). Pick up [15/0 and crystal] eight times, total of 16 beads. Pass through the first 15/0 (red arrow). Leave tail around 3-4 inches. Pass through all beads again and tie knot with the tail. Then, exit at the first 15/0 (red arrow).

2.

ร้อยลูกปัด 15/0 ห้าเม็ด ข้ามคริสตัลไปร้อยที่ลูกปัด 15/0 เม็ดถัดไป (ลูกศรแดง)

Pick up five 15/0s. Skip the crystal. Just pass through the next 15/0 (red arrow).

3.

ทำซ้ำข้อ 2 จนครบรอบ ร้อยผ่านลูกปัด 15/0 สามเม็ดแรกของรอบนี้ (ลูกศรแดง)

Repeat step 2 all around. At the end, pass through the first three 15/0s we just picked up (red arrow).

4.

ร้อยคริสตัลหนึ่งเม็ด แล้วร้อยไปที่ยังลูกปัด 15/0 เม็ดที่สามของส่วนถัดไป (ลูกศรแดง)

Pick up crystal. Pass through the third 15/0 at the next arc (red arrow).

5.

ทำซ้ำข้อ 4 จนรอบวง สุดท้ายจะร้อยผ่านที่ลูกปัด 15/0 ก่อนคริสตัลเม็ดแรกของรอบนี้ (ลูกศรแดง) ดึงด้ายให้แน่น งานจะเริ่มตั้งขึ้นรูป เวลาดึงด้าย ให้ดึงหลังร้อยผ่านลูกปัดเท่านั้น เพราะคมของคริสตัลอาจทำให้ด้ายขาด

Repeat step 4 all around. At the end, exit at 15/0 before the first crystal we just picked up (red arrow). Use tight tension and pull the thread tight at the end. Your work will form a tube shape. When you pull thread, always pull after seed beads only, not after crystal. Crystal may cut your thread.

6.

ต่อไปจะเป็นการทำซ้ำข้อ 2 - ข้อ 5 ร้อยลูกปัดหนึ่งแถว ต่อด้วยคริสตัลอีกหนึ่งแถว ทำแบบนี้ไปจนได้ขนาดความยาวเท่าที่ต้องการ

Repeat step 2 - 5. Made a row with seed beads, then a row of crystals. Repeat until you get the desired length.

จริง ๆ แล้วลืมเรืองการปิดสร้อยไปเลย ทำให้ไม่มีรูปมาลงนะคะ เวลาปิดสร้อย ให้จบที่แถวของคริสตัล ร้อยซ้ำแถวสุดท้ายคริสตัลกับลูกปัดหนึ่งหรือสองรอบ แล้วร้อยย้อนกลับไปในชิ้นงานให้ห่างจากแถวสุดท้าย แล้วค่อยตัดด้าย

I forget about the ending, therefore, I don't have photo for you, sorry. When you want to finish, end with the crystals row. Pass through all crystals and seed beads at the last row twice or more. Then, pass through your work away from the last row. Make sure your work won't come loose before cutting off the thread.

ลาย / Pattern

ในส่วนของผังลาย สีของคริสตัล จะเป็นตามภาพ ในขั้นที่ 1 เริ่มหยิบสีเขียว แถวที่ 1 เม็ดล่างสุดก่อน  แต่พอขึ้นแถวที่ 3 มัันจะไม่ได้เริ่มที่เม็ดล่างสุดแล้วเพราะมันเป็นลายเฉียง แต่มันจะถัดขึ้นไปเรื่อย ๆ ตามเส้นประค่ะ 

ถ้างงหรือสับสน หยิบสีไม่ถูก ให้ดูสีของแถวก่อนหน้านี้ค่ะ

This is the pattern for crystal colors. At step 1 we start with Fern Green, first row, the lowest bead. Then, the second row. However, when you begin the third row, it won't start from the lowest bead now since the pattern is diagonal style. Follow the dash line for the first color to pick up.

If you are not sure which color to pick up, check the previous row.

เส้นนี้ทำไม่เสร็จเพราะคริสตัลไม่พอค่ะ แต่ลายนี้เป็นลายพื้นฐาน เอาไปปรับเปลี่ยน เปลี่ยนขนาดลูกปัด หรือคริสตัล เปลี่ยนสี หรือผังลายได้ตามใจชอบ ที่เห็นกันบ่อย ๆ คือเริ่มด้วยคริสตัล 4 เม็ด สร้อยจะไม่ใหญ่มากเท่านี้ ใส่เป็นข้อมือได้ 

I can't finish the project because I don't have enough crystals. But this technique is a very basic beading technique. You can adjust the size of the beads or colors or patterns, and make your own variations. The popular version starts with four crystals. The finished project won't be this big, you can wear it as a bracelet.

สร้อยข้อมือเส้นนี้เป็นงานเก่ามาก ๆ ร้อยมานานหลายปีแล้ว ใช้มุกแทนคริสตัลกับลูกปัด 11/0 มีการเพิ่มจำนวนลูกปัดจาก 5 เม็ดเป็น 7 เม็ด

This is my old bracelet many years ago. I substituted crystals with pearl and used 11/0 seed beads. I also used 7 seed beads during the weaving too.
